Andare and the Giant

ONCE a young man entered Kandy and challenged its citizens to a fight. He was as broad as he was tall and he was very muscular. The people rushed to the palace.

“Your Majesty”, they chorused, “not even the strongest among us can fight this giant.”

Since his ministers could not provide a solution, the king turned to his jester and asked,”Andare, how do we tackle him?”

“Put me and the giant in adjoining rooms, Your Majesty. Feed us both with the choicest dishes for a month.”

Once inside, Andare began chipping away the plaster on the wall with a chisel, to loosen one of the bricks. It took him time because he had to do this task without making a noise and the wall was study.

When a month was over, Andare called out loudly to the giant, “Brother, I have run out of betel leaf and lime. Could you give me some?”

“Yes, but there is strong wall between us.”

“Oh don’t worry, brother,” replied Andare nonchalantly.” I will break the wall with a blow of my fist and make a hole.”

Andare pretended to push out the brick he had loosened with a mighty heave.

The next day, though the king’s men searched everywhere, they could not find the young man. He had vanished!
